Mercenary

Gather up the other villagers and pool your money. You're going to need a fair bit of it if you expect to hire those guys to rid your town of the bandits / marauders / other mercenaries.

Wait, what? Yes, it's true. The history of the mercenary is fraught with good times and bad, and in the bad times the only thing to do is go pillaging yourself. You have to keep food on the table, after all.
